Turning their backs on the high street, an overwhelming majority of the population shopped online over the festive season as 75 per cent of British adults joined the ‘click-aholic’ generation. Just 17 per cent of Britons still prefer the experience of shopping on the high street to going online. With over 36 million* British adults clicking online to shop, spending an estimated £7.45billion in December ’07 alone**, the research revealed that confidence in online shopping is soaring, and that it is 35 to 44 year olds leading the way in the online revolution (84%). Of the 1,700 online shoppers questioned by Savebuckets.com, 65 per cent said that their experiences of shopping online had been positive, 57 per cent saying that shopping online saved them a lot of time and money. Just one in seven said that they were concerned about giving bank details over the internet (15%) and one in fourteen were frustrated that items ordered did not arrive in time for Christmas (7%). Further Findings · Welsh: The Biggest ‘Click-Aholics’: The Welsh are the most likely to shop online, 83% going online over the festive season. They are also the least likely to say that they prefer shopping on the high street (9%). · Middle Age Britons Embracing Online Shopping: Whilst 35 to 44 year olds are the most likely to shop online (84%), people across the middle age ranges (25-54) have high confidence in shopping online. 73 per cent of 25 to 34 year olds have positive opinions of online shopping, 66 per cent expressing no concerns about going online to shop.
